Upgrade Complete !!

Friday, June 5th, 2009

I’ve just upgraded this blog to the latest version of Wordpress. I’ve also created a nice new theme for the blog. There are still some unresolved issues that cropped up during the upgrade, but they should be cleared in a few hours. Hopefully I’ll be back to blogging as usual soon :) .

Is the Universe already dead ?

Antennae Galaxies

Was browsing through Photos at The Big picture from the Hubble telescope (like the one above from the site), reading through the descriptions that went with the photos. I noticed an odd thing , most of these photos are of celestial bodies thousands if not millions of light years away. (The Antennae Galaxies shown here are 55 million light-years away). Now if my understanding of light years is correct, the light that we see today left that galaxy (say the antennae galaxy) approximately 55 million years ago. That is to say that 55 million years have elapsed since the light radiated and reached us, and needless to say a lot might have transpired since then. Now the width of the known universe is estimated to be 156 billion light years across, and the age of the earth about 4.5 billion years. So to put things in perspective light from that end of the universe would take say a few more billion years to even reach us (if at all). So that brings us to the question, what if the universe already started “dying”, would we be dead and long gone along with it before we could ever see any sign of it ?

The audacity of Terror

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

26th November 2008, will go down in Mumbai’s history as a black day. It was the day that terror struck Mumbai again. Late yesterday night, reports started emerging that there were shots fired in South Mumbai. In a little while news trickled in that this was a terrorist attack of the likes that India had never seen before. (more…)

Being “Open” pays !!!

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Quite recently I had a longish GTalk discussion with one of my friends on the merits of posting pictures on Flickr that were “Open”. Flickr gives you the choice of licensing your photos under creative commons or keeping all rights to posted photos reserved. In the latter case, your photographs can’t even be copied or saved to disk and high resolution versions of them can’t be accessed.

Blogging Woes

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

I’ve been facing a weird problem of late. For some odd reason when I log on to the internet from home, I get a “404-Page Not found error” for my blog. It seems to be accessible from elsewhere. It’s probably some DNS issue with my ISP’s servers, I’m trying to get it resolved. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get back to regular blogging then.

Trekking in the Rains

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Went trekking to Karnala fort today with friends from NMIMS. It was supposed to be a class trip, but as was expected only 25 brave souls turned up. The day began on a slightly annoying note with us starting about an hour and a half (due to people turning up as per IST and one lost cellphone), but we soon reached our destination. The lush green hills showed plenty of promise of a nice trek up to the Fort. We grabbed a quick snack and headed up to the fort at about 11:30.

The trail up to Karnala is a winding one that alternates between stretches of rocky and flat terrain. It’s particularly difficult if you have been out of shape ( as it looked like most of us were ), and very soon we were huffing and puffing our way to the top. The forest was nice and cool ( and a tad too humid), with greenery all round, and made for a nice hike up the hill.

After much cajoling and convincing ( I kept telling anyone who asked that we had only 30 minutes more of the trail to cover) we finally reached the Karnala pinnacle. Everyone was quite pleased at the difficult task accomplished and we spent some time clicking snaps and relaxing in the cool breeze that was blowing.

Later on, as we started down the hill, it started raining. The rain made the trek down very slippery and somehow sliding, tripping and climbing down we finally reached back to the road.

All in all it was a memorable class trip :-) .
