Went for this concert by the Bombay Chamber Orchestra at the NCPA. The concert featured some guest musicians from Japan and Tokyo. The evening included music by Beethoven, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Sarasate and Toyama. Having never heard Yuzo Toyama’s compositions, was extremely intrested on hearing his work. The evening was quite an enchanting one with some excellent music. Though the typical Indian crowd was a bit overenthusiastic in its appreciation – they kept clapping at every pause !!!

The piece by Toyama titled “Rhapsody” was brilliant. I’ve never heard such a wonderful combination of instruments, both traditional western classical ones and Japanese musical instruments. Hoping to pick up more by this composer in the future. The piece that was played in the end was brilliantly conducted by the conductor, with him getting the audience adding to the music through clapping.

The Arties Festival happens sometime later this week, hope to catch that too.

Went to the Arties Festival, India at the NCPA yesterday. The western classical music concert was presented by Arties Events. Arties Events was founded by Gauthier Herrman, Shakuntala Hingorani and Morgan Segui and is dedicated to the production of high quality musical events. The concert presented works by Johannes Brahms, Mozart and Chausson.

I particularly liked the Cello and piano sonata (Brahms). Some of the pieces they played were more of the mellow side of things, and maybe they could have done with an more upbeat selection. Still the icing on the cake was the surprise piece they played at the end. They began by getting all the musicians on stage, and surprisingly two people on the piano. Then the music flowed, and boy how did it flow. Of all the things they could have played, they played hindi flimi music songs like the title track from Dhoom, songs from Murder etc. suitably adapted to violin, viola, cello and piano. This was interspersed with medleys from the more well known classical pieces. All in all, this was an amazing display of fusion at it’s finest. This really made my day.

Hope to attend their next concert soon.

The group consists of Hungarian pianist Hanna Devich, Dutch cellist Jasper Havelaar and South African violinist Sarah Oates. The group have been performing regularly and their repertoire ranges from Haydn to Shostakovitch.

The concert started with a Joseph Suk piece “Elegie opus 23″. This was followed pieces by Claude Debussy. They then played some Astor Piazolla pieces. These were simply amazing, I particularly enjoyed “Oblivion” and “La Muerte del Angel”. I haven’t heard any piece quite like them to date and the music is refreshingly modern.

Post-intermission they played some Antonín Dvo?ák to conclude the evening. I had a nice time listening to some great music after a long time, plus the trip down to NCPA has given me some new ideas for photographs which I hope to implement soon. Nothing like a little music to inspire you.

Went to the Jazz Utsav at Lands End Ampitheatre at Bandra yesterday. The amphitheatre was jam packed, and just about managed to get some passes and squeeze in. Thanks to that just about managed to get a glimpse at the first act. The second act was the inimitable Louis Banks Quartet. They played some original compositions, some of which were fabulous. They were followed by the German Jazz group, Café du Sport. These guys were amazing, they played some excellent original compositions that had the crowd spellbound. The show wrapped up at about 10:00 in the night. Been a long time since I heard music at any concert, so this was a very welcome and refreshing start to the week. Kind of looking foward to the Devich Trio at NCPA on Tuesday now !
