Watched three good movies over the last few days.
Started off with WALL-E, Pixar-Disney’s latest animated flick. In WALL-E we see the future earth that is overrun with tons of garbage. Enter WALL-E, the lonely robot, who is one of the last garbage compacting machines left. WALL-E spends his time roaming about with his pet cockroach, collecting trinkets. One fine day he finds a little plant that he carefully pots in an old shoe.
Enter EVE (or EVE-A as WALL-E calls her), the trigger happy probe sent to find signs of vegetable life on earth by the earthmen in exile. As soon as WALL-E sets eyes on her it’s love at first sight. Then when EVE shuts down after finding the plant and is recalled, WALL-E goes after her, on an epic journey. The movie is lovely in it’s animation, minimal use of dialogue and heart warming storyline. Also liked the little homage paid to HAL (2001: A Space Odyssey for the uninitiated) in it.
Next I watched an old 2001 action movie called 51st State starring Samuel L Jackson. The movie follows a chemist called Elmo McElroy who has invented a new drug dubbed POS-51, which is 51 times more potent than any street drug today. After blowing up his former employer, Elmo heads to England to sell his formula for $20 million. Aided by the street smart thug Felix Desouza and his assassin ex-girlfriend Dakota, its a fight to the finish.
51st State is a decent action flick, with its funny moments. Immensely watchable, it’s definitely worth a see.
That brings us to the final movie, In Bruges, that I watched last night. In Bruges follows two hitmen, Ken (Gleeson) and Ray (Farrel) who are asked to hole up in Bruges after a botched hit by their boss Harry Waters (Fiennes). Ken, fascinated by medieval culture soaks up the old churches and buildings in beautiful Bruges, while Ray is enamored by Chloë, a hip young woman who sells drugs on the local set of a movie featuring Jimmy, an American dwarf. Soon Harry calls with instructions for Ken to eliminate Ray as per his code of honor. Ken eventually refuses to do so, setting up a showdown with Harry in the climax. What follows is an almost Shakespearean ending involving dumdum bullets, an pregnant inkeeper and a code of honor that must be upheld at any cost, and strangely the scantity of innocent life.
In Bruges was hilariously funny, smart and witty. And the ending was quite well done. All in all an A-1 movie that deserves 5 stars or more with some amazing acting from Colin Farrel. And of course there is beautiful, pictresque Bruges also ( Hope to visit here someday).
