Watched Iron Man yesterday at Hub. The movie is Marvel’s latest superhero offering for the silver screen. It begins with debonair playboy Tony Stark enjoying an escorted ride in the deserts of Afghanistan. His military convoy is attacked by terrorists who are using his own weapons. Captured and fatally injured, he is told by the terrorists to build the Jericho missile, Stark’s latest invention in the art of war. Stark first builds a device to keep the shrapnel from tearing his heart and then goes on to build an iron exoskeleton with the aid of which he escapes the terrorist hideout.Badly shaken and seeing what his inventions can do in the wrong hands, Stark rededicates his firm to building inventions for the betterment of mankind and builds his Iron Man suit so that he can protect the innocent and those in need of help. Along the way he takes out terrorists in Afghanistan, is faced with a hostile takeover of his company by his sleazy partner Obadiah Stane, tussles with a new super villain called the Iron Monger and even manages to win the heart of the customary love interest.

The movie has some great performances by Robert Downey Jr. He seems like he was born to play the part. Terence Howard plays Stark’s friend Jim Rhodes, who later on becomes the War Machine (something that’s hinted in the movie, big time sequel chances I guess). But best of all I really liked Jeff Bridges as the bald Obadiah Stane. He has a commanding screen presence and is almost unrecognizable as Stane.

Some of the stuff that did seem a bit weird was that the terrorists spoke hindi instead of arabic or farsi or pashto and Stark didn’t get electrocuted in spite of being dunked into tub of water, with a magnet attached to car battery round his chest. The most funny thing was S.H.I.E.L.D. In the movie the acronym stood for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Engagement and Logistics Division. It can’t get more inane than this :-)

But despite these few flaws, Iron Man’s a great movie, do go catch it in a theater near you.
